Reductil Explained
Reductil (sibutramine) is a weight loss treatment designed to aid those battling with obesity or those who are overweight with additional risk factors such as diabetes and/or elevated lipids.
Sibutramine works by inhibiting certain chemicals in the brain (namely noradrenaline and serotonin) which in turn makes you feel full sooner so you eat less food.
Reductil is a very successful treatment but it is not a magic pill. It works best when combined with a low calorie diet and an increase in your physical activity. In fact, Reductil is only advised if you have had difficulty in losing weight over a three month trial with weight-reducing diet and exercise alone.
The prescribing conditions are
- Your BMI (Body Mass Index) must be 30 or above, or must be 27 or above, and you have a medical condition that would benefit from losing weight (such as diabetes).
- You must lose at least 2 kg in weight at four weeks, and 5% of your initial weight by three months from starting sibutramine. If not, it should be stopped.
- You must be between the ages of 18 and 65 years.
If you continue to lose weight, Reductil can be continued for a maximum of one year.
Taking Reductil
Dosage: One 10mg or 15mg tablet a day at least one hour before eating. Start on the lower dose
When to take: It is best to take Reductil in the morning just before your first meal. Try to take it at the same time each day to avoid missing any doses. Please note: If you forget to take a day's dose, just take the next dose when it is due. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up.
VERY IMPORTANT: You will need to have your weight and blood pressure checked regularly while you are taking Reductil. SEE SIDE EFFECTS
It is also important that you stick to a balanced and nutritional diet.

The Side Effects of Reductil
Not everyone will experience the side effects of taking Reductil, but it's very important that you take note of them as they can be quite serious.
CHECK YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE: Increased blood pressure and/or heart rate is a very serious side effect of Reductil. It is important that a patient's blood pressure is monitored every two weeks for the first three months of using reductil and then monthly thereafter. You will have to stop taking this medicine if your blood pressure or resting pulse rate increase after you start taking it. You can have your blood pressure checked at your GP, gym, or a local pharmacy. Home monitors are also available to buy either online or from your local pharmacy.
Possible milder side-effects include:
- Palpitations.
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Sleeplessness.
