Allergy Management

Having an allergy can be miserable for people who suffer with allergy symptoms on a regular basis. An allergic reaction occurs when your body is hypersensitive to one or several substances, called allergens. There are many different types of allergens : different types of food, but also pet hair, dust mites, as well as plants (which is most often called hay fever) or even chemicals. Symptoms can vary greatly from person to person, which means that for someone, it can be only a mere inconvenience, whereas other people really suffer and need medical attention.

Get the right diagnosis

Sadly, people are sometimes misdiagnosed or don’t receive a diagnosis at all. If you suspect that you are allergic to something, you should consult your doctor. He should be able to make a diagnosis based on our description of the symptoms. It could help if you’re keeping a diary where you write the occurrence of the allergic reactions as well as the symptoms (Does the allergy affect your eyes and nose, or is it only skin rash? Is it only in summer?, etc.)

If your doctor is unable to diagnose your condition based on what you tell him, he might have to carry out some tests, such as a skin prick test or a blood test.

The 3 most common allergies among allergy sufferers are :

Hay fever

People suffering from hay fever are allergic to the pollen of wind pollinated plants. In the UK, the most common plant allergen is the pollen of grass, followed by the pollen of trees, flowering shrubs, flowers or weeds. Depending on when the plant releases its pollen, you will suffer from symptoms at different times of the year, but it usually occurs in the summer. The most common symptoms are frequent sneezing, wheezing, blocked and runny nose and watery eyes.

Animal Hair

The most common animal allergies are to cats and dogs hair, however some people are allergic to any kind of furry or feathered animal. People colloquially refer to this type of allergy as pet hair allergy, however strictly speaking it is not the hair but the dander consisting of tiny skin scales, dandruff, urine and saliva particles that causes the allergy.

House Dust Mites

Dust mites are microscopic living organisms practically invisible to the naked eye which can be found in bedding, mattresses, carpets and textile upholstery. They feed off organic particles such as human skin flakes or dandruff which naturally accumulate in bedding, especially pillows. Their faeces consist of protein which, upon inhalation, causes an allergic reaction to some people and in some cases could cause asthma.

Unlike hay fever, which is a seasonal condition, an allergy to pet hair or dust mites can occur at any time throughout the year. An allergy can develop at any stage throughout life and can sometimes disappear over time if the body develops resistance against the allergen.

How to treat allergies

There are a few measures you can take yourself to minimise the chances of an allergic reaction. If you suffer from dust mites from example, you can follow a strict hygiene, consisting of regular hoovering, and frequent changing and washing of bed linen and towels. Buying an adapted mattress and duvet is highly advisable.

The most common medical allergy management consists of antihistamine medicines. When your body is exposed to the allergen, it responds by releasing large amounts of histamine, which cause you to experience the typical allergy symptoms. Antihistamines work by preventing the release of histamines, which can stop or at least alleviate the allergic reactions. A variety of antihistamines can be bought over the counter, however some of the stronger ones must be prescribed by a doctor, as they can induce drowsiness.
