Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea Home Testing

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are two of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the UK. They are both caused by bacteria, can infect both men and women, are passed on by intimate sexual contact and don't necessarily cause symptoms.

FirstMed offers a combination home test for these two prevalent STI's. FREE Treatment by post if you test positive.

Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea Combination Test

According to the NHS, 40% of women who test positive for gonorrhoea also have chlamydia. The causes and symptoms of Gonorrhea can be very similar to those of Chlamydia, so it makes sense to test for both diseases at the same time rather than individually.

To make sure that you have not contracted either of these sexually transmitted infections, take Firstmed's combination test. Testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea involves taking a simple urine based check - One urine sample screens for both diseases.

If you have any symptoms of an infection (pain, redness, burning sensation when you pass urine or discharge) then we recommend a full STI screen so that we can correctly identify the root cause.

Gonorrhoea Information

Gonorrhoea is a very prevalent sexually transmitted infection. It is caused by a bacterium called gonococcus and used to be known as 'the clap' in years gone by.

Gonorrhoea is easily passed between people through intimate sexual contact, most commonly through having unprotected sex - including oral and anal sex, and sharing sex toys.

Symptoms

About 50% of women and 10% of men who have contracted gonorrhoea do not experience any symptoms, which means it can often go untreated for some time.

If they show up, symptoms of gonorrhoea occur within 2 weeks after you are infected.

Women may notice:
Thick green or yellow discharge from the vagina.
Pain or tenderness in the lower abdominal area.
Burning sensation when urinating, or a frequent need to urinate.
Irritation or discharge from the anus.
Bleeding between periods or heavier periods.

Men may notice:
A thick white, yellow or green-coloured discharge from the tip of the penis.
Pain or tenderness caused by inflammation of the testicles or prostate gland.
Burning sensation when urinating, or a frequent need to urinate.
Irritation or discharge from the anus.

Treatment

New guidelines on the treatment of gonorrhoea: cases of combined chlamydia and gonorrhoea are becoming more common, so much so that all patients diagnosed with gonorrhoea are automatically treated for chlamydia too.

Treatment consists of two one-off doses of antibiotics - Suprax and Zithromax - one type to be taken once in the morning and the other in the evening

To avoid reinfection, any sexual partners should be treated too. If your partner has tested positive, Firstmed can prescribe treatment without testing following an online consultation with our doctor.

Sex After Treatment

Don't have unprotected sex for at least six weeks after you have completed this course of gonorrhoea treatment.

What happens if it isn't treated?

Untreated gonorrhoea can cause serious health problems in later life.

Gonorrhoea can lead to PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) in women and infections of the testicles and prostate glands in men.
