Hair Loss Information

Hair loss is very common. In fact, male pattern hair loss affects about 50% of men by age 50. It can begin in your teens, 20s, or 30s, and before you know it, much of your hair may already be gone. No matter what the cause of hair loss, there are hair loss solutions available.

Left untreated, hair loss is a condition that usually gets worse.

Causes of Hair loss

There are several causes of hair loss which account for virtually all baldness.

Local and external problems are the easiest to control before the onset of baldness. These causes vary including hygienic, traumatic, infectious or medicinal. Among hygienic causes are dandruff, scaling, severe itching and scalp tenderness. In these cases time becomes very important because the conditions must be recognized and treated in time before the hair follicles are permanently disabled. Certain internal medications may change the normal function of the follicular structure which, as a result, may lead to excessive hair loss.

Genetic factors vary because an individual does not inherit baldness as such, but rather a predisposition to a weak follicular structure. This predisposition may come from either the maternal or paternal side of the family. Your mother or father could have passed along a gene that makes your hair follicles more susceptible to a chemical in the body called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT.

Men with male pattern hair loss have elevated levels of DHT in their balding scalp. DHT is a substance in the body that can shrink the hair follicle until it no longer produces visible hair. Scientists believe DHT and family history are key factors in hair loss. For more on Male Pattern Baldness click here

General or acute diseases may influence the scalp by changing its structure and interfering with normal
function.

Treating hair loss

You need to decide how you feel about hair loss. Male hair loss affects a large part of the male population and people react very differently to it.

It is important to try to accept hair loss for what it is - something natural. Rather than trying to camouflage bald spots with remaining hair or a wig, it is probably a better idea to leave your hair as it is, or shave it off completely. If, however, you decide to try to regain your hair, possible hair loss solutions and medical treatments are available to buy online at Firstmed.

Because hair loss can be a progressive condition, the sooner you do something about it, the better chance you have to retain what hair you have and possibly regrow some of the hair you’ve lost.
