Available Acne Treatments

Acne affects both men and women and while it is typically associated with spotty teenagers during puberty, an increasing number of adults suffer from this chronic skin disorder. Acne is brought on by many factors such as hormonal changes or a genetic predisposition and while it can cause a great deal of distress to those affected, the good news is that most cases can be managed well. Your doctor will help you work out a suitable treatment routine and if you stick to it, you should be able to improve visible results within one to two months. Below is a brief overview over some of the most common prescription acne treatments, all of which are available to order via the Myonlinedoctor prescription service.

Topical Treatments

As a first treatment approach, your doctor will most likely prescribe topically applied acne medicines to you. These include antibiotics fighting the spot-causing bacteria as well as peeling agents which help to unblock the pores.

Dalacin T

Dalacin T contains the active ingredient clindamycin, which is an antibiotic. It inhibits the growth of Propionibacterium acnes which is a factor in the formation of inflamed spots. Use the lotion or gel twice a day after cleansing and drying your face. This product is intended for topical use only and may cause skin irritations such as flaky and red, dry skin. Usually this subsides after a little while. Your doctor will advise you of potential side effects and also which other medicines/cosmetics are safe to use during treatment with Dalacin.

Differin

Differin’s active ingredient adapalene belongs to a class of medicines called topical retinoids, i.e. vitamin A derivatives. Differin is available in different strengths and either as a gel or cream. Your doctor will decide which is right for you depending on the severity fo the acne. Adapalene helps to keep pores clear and is as such a good treatment choice for people suffering from blackheads, but also spots and whiteheads. Differin can make the skin more sensitive to the sun. It is therefore important to use appropriate sunscreen throughout treatment. Differin is typically applied once a day in the evenings after gently cleansing and drying the face.

Duac

Duac combines two powerful ingredients in one product. It contains clindamycin, an antibiotic and benzoyl peroxide. Both of these compounds inhibit and prevent the growth and reproduction of acne bacteria thus allowing the skin to clear up and heal. Duac is used once a day and applied to the affected areas in a thin later to a clean, dry face. Duac may cause skin irritation which normally subsides after a little while. Please always read the patient leaflet before using any medicine.

Skinoren

Skinoren acts on the cell shedding process of the skin and helps to unclog pores. It contains the active ingredient azelaic acid. The 2% cream is applied twice a day (morning and evening) and may initially cause stinging and redness. The maximum treatment period is six months. Azelaic acid is particularly effective against comedogenic acne vulgaris.

Oral Acne Treatments

People suffering from severe acne may benefit from taking antibiotics in addition to using them topically so as to fight the bacteria both from the inside as well as the outside. Myonlinedoctor offers two effective antibiotics to treat acne via our online prescription service.

Minocin MR

Minocycline is an antibiotic which kills acne-causing bacteria. This allows the skin to recover and the spots to heal by clearing up infection and inflammation from the inside. Minocin is usually taken once a day, preferrably around the same time each day. The dosage is 1 x 100mg. It can be taken with or without food. As some antibiotics cause stomach upset, many people find they tolerate the medicine better after having eaten a little. In some people Minocin can cause vaginal or oral thrush. If you experience this or any other side effects, please consult your prescribing healthcare practitioner and as always do read the patient leaflet carefully prior to taking this medicine.

Oxytetracyline

Just like minocycline, oxytetracycline is an oral antibiotic which clears up acne from the inside by fighting Propionibacterium acnes. Your doctor will tell you how to take this medicine, usually the daily dose is 250mg to 500mg which is taken either in one go or spread out throughout the day. A course of treatment normally lasts 3 months. Broad-spectrum antibiotics can sometimes cause stomach upset and disturb the natural digestive flora so it is a good idea to take a daily probiotic supplement to restore the intestinal balance.

Hormonal Treatment

Adult acne in women can be an indicator of an underlying hormonal imbalance. Too many androgens (male sex hormones) can lead to greasy hair, oily skin and acne as well as excessive facial and body hair, a condition known as hirsutism. For women who are also seeking a reliable contraceptive and who are suffering from any of these conditions, such as acne, Dianette may be indicated. The active ingredient co-cyprindiol is a powerful anti-androgen and can help clear up acne while providing effective protection against unwanted pregnancy. Please note that Dianette is generally not prescribed solely for contraception.
