Effects of Impotence Treatments

When used properly and appropriately, oral impotence treatments such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are helpful to men with erectile dysfunction. In order to ensure that the medicine is safe and effective, it is important to take it as prescribed and also to know what adverse effects to look for. All medicines have side-effects associated with their use, Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are no exception.

These drugs were the focus of controversy first because of evidence that they increase the risk of cardiac problems in men with any history of cardiac events, and more recently because of reports that these impotence drugs increase the risk of a stroke in the optic nerve, causing blindness. Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra cause drops in systemic blood pressure in many patients. This is caused by a dilation of general blood vessels, as well as the vessels that allow erection of the penis. These drops in blood pressure can bring on cardiac events including:

  • Heart attack
  • Sudden cardiac death
  • Hypertension

Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra have most recently been linked with sudden blindness in one eye, called stroke of the eye, which occurs when the blood supply is cut off to an optic nerve. They have also been linked with piapism, a prolonged and painful erection that requires immediate medical attention. The patients most at risk for these conditions, are men who:

  • Have heart disease
  • Are over 50 years old
  • Have diabetes
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have high cholesterol
  • Smoke
  • Have certain eye problems

If you are using one of these impotence drugs and notice symptoms of cardiac problems or changes in vision, stop taking the medication and see your healthcare provider immediately
