Businesses urged to help men kick the habit

Pubs, clubs and bingo halls in Northumberland are being urged to get advice on helping their male customers to stop smoking, as the habit can cause impotence in some men.

Less than a month before the smoking ban comes into force in England, Elaine Gibbons, smoking cessation advisor, is urging people to use the incentive to kick the habit for their health's sake.

"Carbon monoxide is one of the by-products of cigarette smoke. It sticks to red blood cells and thickens the blood up so you are not oxygenating your blood as effectively," she told the Sunday Sun.

According to anti-smoking group Action on Smoking and Health, smoking can increase the risk of erectile dysfunction by 50 per cent for males in their 30s or 40s, with figures from the British Medical Association showing that 120,000 men of this age are impotent because of their nicotine addiction.

"Your carbon monoxide reading halves within eight hours of stopping smoking," Ms Gibbons added.
