Treating Flu
Influenza is a very common condition and so it is very important to be aware of your flu treatment options. In most cases, influenza treatment must be done at home. As it is a virus, antibiotics will have no effect, but there are certain flu treatments you can undertake.
How should the flu be treated?
In most cases, flu can be treated at home. Your doctor cannot give you
anything to clear it up and antibiotics will have no effect.
You should:
- Go to bed and stay there until you feel well enough to get up.
- Keep warm, but not too hot, and make sure the room is well ventilated.
- Drink plenty of fluids and eat if you feel like it.
- Take regular paracetamol according to the dosage on the label. Remember not to give aspirin to children under 12.
- Take it easy afterwards and do not rush straight back into your usual routine. You are likely to feel weak and shaky for a couple of weeks
- See your doctor if you have a raised temperature for more than a week or if your symptoms are very severe, or if you are worried. Unlike some other infections, the flu doesn't usually require medical treatment. In some cases, your doctors may choose to use certain antiviral drugs (such as Tamiflu) to treat the flu. These are prescription medications, and a doctor should be consulted before the drugs are used. Antiviral treatment lasts for 5 days and must be started within 2 days of illness. Therefore, if you get flu-like symptoms, seek medical care early.
The best way flu treatment of all is prevention. October or November is the best time to get vaccinated, but getting vaccinated in December or even later can still be beneficial since most influenza activity occurs in January or later in most years.
Can antiviral drugs cure the flu?
When started within the first two days of illness, they can reduce the duration of the disease but cannot cure it outright.
Four different antiviral drugs (amantadine, rimantadine, zanamivir, and oseltamivir) have been approved as an influenza treatment.
- Tamiflu, is an effective influenza (cold and flu) treatment that like a flu jab can also be used to reduce your chances of getting a flu. Flu outbreaks are a yearly occurrence and Tamiflu is the best and most convenient defense currently available.
